MultiColour WebQuest.
A WebQuest for the
tolerance and respect of all cultures.
Black or White?
Yellow or Brown?
.
.
.
All of them come from the
distant past. All of them have a long track record. All of them are delightful.
Does colour matter?
INTRODUCTION.
"...
they came first for the
Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because
I wasn't a Jew.
Then
they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't
a trade unionist.
Then
they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant.
Then
they came for me, and by that time, no one was left to speak up..."
Martin Niemoeller, Lutheran Pastor
What about you?
Do
you also think you don't need to speak up? Do you also think you are not
in trouble because you are not a Communist or a Jew or a Trade Unionist or
a Catholic?.
There
are still violations of Human Rights every day. There are examples of intolerance
and discrimination in many places. If you wait till they affect you, it could
be too late.
This
WebQuest will help you understand what causes these situations and how they
can alter your life in your classroom, in your neighbourhood or in your
town.
I
hope, at the end, you'll come to some conclusions and take a stand in favour
of tolerance and respect of other cultures.
I
hope, at the end, we can hold hands and build together a better world.
Task
TASK.
The best way to accept other cultures
is to learn about them.
Do you think you know enough about people
from
In this WebQuest you will read about traditions,
history and the way people live. You will be asked to take a virtual tour
round several related web sites in order to get information about different
cultures and you'll be exposed to different controversial points of view.
Take notes on your surfing
save pictures, images, symbols,
graphics or anything else you consider
relevant to the topic.
You will be working in groups of five
people. The different members in the group will have specific roles and
tasks but you will be asked to join together the information you have gathered,
discuss controversial points and agree on any new steps to be taken. So
remember you are part of a team, rely on your team mates and let them rely
on you.
Task2
At the end you will have to organize the
materials you have compiled, create a hypertext document and/or a power
point presentation and explain it.
Your mission is to convince your classmates
of the great value of what you have discovered and how we can benefit from
such a rich diversity of cultures.

CONCLUSION.
You have been involved in a very complicated
task and you have worked very hard. You deserve the best. Congratulations!!
The objective of this WebQuest was to help
you to research complex aspects of our world and run away from simplistic
ideas. Nothing is just black or white. Nothing is just good or bad.
Your participation and collaboration in
the team work and the discussion of different perspectives have helped everybody
to gain knowledge. We know now that to understand how things work we need
to come closer and look at them very carefully. We know now the causes hidden
behind discrimination: superstition, ignorance, envy, fear, ...
I hope that after completing this WebQuest
you know a little bit more about other cultures, you understand them better
and you appreciate the richness of such a big diversity.
Now you are ready to share your knowledge
and help make a better world.
If you liked not only the topic but also
the way you worked things out, I invite you to visit some related links,
you will enjoy them.
And now off you go... but come back any
time you want.
TEACHER'S NOTES.
Background.
The quotation in the Introduction section
should help teachers and students to centre the topic and know what the WebQuest
will be about. This task has to be done as team work. Discussion should
be enhanced and carefully guided as it may be the point of departure of a
successful completion of the activity.
Procedure.
This WebQuest has been designed for 14-15
years old students at Secondary School in Spain. However it can de easily
adapted for students at different levels.
Tip 1. Don't let language be an obstacle at the early stage
because
students can be lost too quickly. Offer a web-translator
for those
students with a low level of the language and let them understand what
they are researching and get basic ideas about the topic.
Tip 2. Have a dictionary on-line
so that students can look up new
words in easily.
Tip 3. Guide students to use Spelling checkers to avoid too
many
mistakes.
Tip 4. Help them to choose the kind of document and presentation
according to their abilities (Word document, Power Point, Web
Page...)
Technical aspects.
It is very important to be familiar with
the hardware and software you are going to use.
Be sure you have the programmes you need.
Check the web sites that will be visited.
Keep some web sites in cache memory, just
in case.
Web copy some sites in case connections
fail
Have some alternative task on paper in case
some electric problem occurs.
