MATHPLETS'2000

1st European Contest of Educational
Mathematical Applets

This contest, after the UNESCO declaration of the year 2000 as the World Mathematical Year, has been organised to raise Maths teaching standards and to disseminate materials designed by teachers using the potential of Information and Communication Technology. The contest, announced and coordinated by the Department of Mathematics of the Virtual School of the European Schoolnet (EUN), has the support of the Education Department of the Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalan Autonomous Government), through PIE (Programa d'Informātica Educativa - ICT in Education Programme), and of Sun Microsystems.

It is addressed to European teachers, students and any European Academic institution working on the application of ICT in the teaching of Maths to foster creativity as well as the production and availability of meaningful teaching and learning materials on the Internet.

Materials and participants

The Jury wishes to congratulate all the participants for. In spite of the quality of all the work produced by the participants, only three MATHPLETS have been awarded following the contest rules.

Awards

  • Thrid Prize to:

"Mathematical Visualization and Online Experiments with JavaView", by
    Konrad Polthier, from Germany.

The jury has appreciated the enormous amount of possibilities that JavaView offers, the useful documentation, the good navigation environment and the high technical level of the applets included.

  • Second Prize to:

"Mathématiques: animations à base d´applets JAVA", by
    Jean-Paul Quelen, from France.

The jury has assessed very positively the set of excellent applets that cover different contents in the Maths curriculum. They are small pieces of net-software which can be of much use to teachers who want to build web pages intended for direct instruction.

  • First Prize to:

    "Transformations", by
    Brian Dye, from UK.

The jury has appreciated this large set of web pages where one will be instructed about geometric transformations. From ICT point of view, working with them is very easy, in spite of the fact that mathematics in the highest levels is not so easy! Wholly interactive, the use gets immediate response to actions. It constitutes a superior example of use of a preexisting environments in building good didactic materials.

The jury wishes to congratulate and encourage all participants to go on exploiting creativity and mastery in ICT.
