HISTORY
|
| It is not clear the origin of the name "Bellcaire".
It probably means a nice and well-chosen place, but some specialised
explanations say it could come from the vulgar arabic Bu-l-khàir,
probably an important person linked to the city of Balaguer. |
|
|
|
In 1091, Ermengol IV, the Count of Urgell, commended
to the Monastery of Tavernoles the restoration of the place
and the construction of a church dedicated to the Virgin . On 31st
October 1139, the Count tried to repopulate the place for the second
time and a fortress was also constructed. |
| Probably the first inhabitants of Bellcaire worked in
the fields (grain and vineyard) and they kept their crops in "sitges"
(holes made in the rock), as the Sitjar Square reminds us (nowadays
this square is known as Mercat Square). They used some animals to
work in the fields. |
|
|
|
In 1327, there were about 220 inhabitants in Bellcaire,
but the Black Death caused terrible effects and only 4 families were
alive. Also, the Civil War (1462-72) and other wars and plagues prevented
the place from growing (economic crisis, migration, vandalism ...). |
In 1853-1862, with the construction of the Urgell
Canal, we can see a growing of inhabitants as well as the overcoming
of the economic crisis. In 1885 a public fountain was built in the
Major Street.
After the Civil War (1936-39) some important works took place: organization
of the Agricultural Cooperative, the building of a water tank, the
local scales, the rector's office and the building for the "Guàrdia
Civil" (police).
In the 60s the Textile Cooperative Coibesa (1967) and the Centre
of Studies (our school in the present) were set up; the streets were
arranged and the building of the local sports centre was started. |

ECONOMY
|
| Traditionally, agriculture and
farming have been very important in Bellcaire, but today it isn't
so much important. Nowadays, according to the census of 2001, 26.4%
of the population work in agricultural sector, 32.9% in manufacturing
sector and 40.7% in service sector. |
 |
| Most of the agricultural
land is fertile (98'6%) and forage and fruit is cultivated. Most of
the farming corresponds to pigs and poultry. |
| The industrial sector is represented
by small and different factories, like the textile ones and the ones
of transformation of metals. Other examples, not so important, arte
the food industry, the chemical industry, furniture, ... |
 |
| Nowadays, it is important to
mention two industries in Bellcaire which are creating a great number
of new jobs and that they are in constant expansion: La Cooperativa
de Bellcaire and Transalfals, both industries dedicated
to the transformation of forage. |
